Born in Fife, Scotland, he saw much naval action but is remembered principally because he first negotiated, and then received, the surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte aboard his 74 gun ship HMS Bellerophon on 15 July 1815, thereby seeing  an end to the Napoleonic Wars.
