In 1834 he filed a patent on an improvement to the spinning process, whereby Archibald Buchanan’s self stripping cards were fixed to an endless chain, allowing regular cleaning. He was also responsible for a number of agricultural advances and invented the Salmon Ladder, the first known example of which was installed on the River Teith.
