Flame Shells (Limaria hians)

On 27th December 2012, it was announced by Marine Scotland  that a major flame shell reef has been discovered in Loch Alsh, a sea loch in mainland Scotland opposite the south end of Skye. It is estimated that up to 100 million of these beautiful bivalve molluscs make up the reef, which covers an area of approximately 185 acres of sea bed. It has been suggested that this could be of global significance as it may be the largest of its kind in the world.
