Alasdair Grant (Traditional and Modern Wooden Boat Builder)

3A isle of Ewe, Aultbea, Ross-Shire.

Alexander Noble, The Boatyard, Girvan.

Between 1946 and 1992 Noble built in the region of 90 wooden vessels for the fishing industry. They now build in steel. They are one of only three yards in the UK entrusted with planned maintenance of the RNLI’s lifeboat fleet.

The Community of Arran Seabed Trust has fought for, and achieved, its aim of  a protected seabed area.

Ayrshire Breed

A heritage breed of dairy cattle originating from Ayrshire in western Scotland.


Launched in 1886 by Charles Connell. She is a steel-hulled fully rigged ship now berthed at the San Francisco Maritime Museum.

Belted Galloway

A breed of  beef cattle originating from Galloway in south west Scotland. Often referred to as “Belties”.

Black-Mouth Catshark (Galeus melastomus)

Scientists from Herriot-Watt University have discovered that the Mingulay coral reef in the Outer Hebrides is a spawning ground for the species. A further related species, the lesser-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) is also using the site.

Boreray Sheep

Originating from the St Kilda archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, it is also known as the Boreray Blackface or the Hebridean Blackface. It is one of the rarest breeds in the UK and is listed as “Category 1 Critical” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Fewer than 300 breeding females are known to exist.
