MURRAY, Sir John KCB FRS FRSE FRSGS (1841-1914) Father of Modern Oceanography


Born in Cobourg, Canada, he was a son of Elizabeth Macfarlane and Robert Murray who had emigrated from Scotland to Canada in around 1834. At 17 years of age he returned to Scotland to further his education and remained there until his death.


THOMSON, Sir Charles Wyville FRSE FRS FLS FGS FZS (1830-1882) Natural Historian & Marine Zoologist

Born Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. He made major contributions to biological understanding of the deep oceans and the existence of deep sea currents. The Wyville-Thomson Ridge in the North Atlantic is named after him.
