Founded in 1856 by a group of 38 Scottish actuaries. It became the first actuarial organisation to be granted a Royal Charter and the right to award fellowships (FFA). In May 2010 members voted to merge with the Institute of Actuaries, creating the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and this came to pass on 1st August 2010.

The faculty has existed since 1532 when the College of Justice was set up by the Scottish parliament, however its origins are believed to be earlier. It is the body for practising advocates.

Incorporated prior to 1668, the faculty and its library, established in 1817, serves the needs of the legal profession in Glasgow and west central Scotland.
